We’re getting closer and closer to my favorite time of year, guys! And no, I’m not talking about the holiday season. I’m talking about convention season, the time of year where tons of conventions are going on all over the country, and nerds are gathering to squeal with delight as they see their fandoms being represented and adored all around them.
Convention season also means cosplay, cosplay, cosplay, and even some more cosplay. While I can easily appreciate the blood, sweat, and burned fingers put into each and every cosplay I have to admit something… Some cosplays are just overdone!
Now, let me put this out there: don’t let this deter you from creating a costume of one of your favorite characters; overdone is not synonymous with bad in this situation. I’ll even admit that I’m dressing up as one of these characters because it’s easy and fun. Be whoever you want to be, but if you want to lessen the risk of running into four or five others dressed exactly like you, don’t cosplay as one of these characters.
In no particular order, here are the top 10 most overdone cosplays:
Misty (from Pokemon): It’s quite easy to see why people cosplay as Misty. She’s cute. She’s adorable. She’s sassy. She’s a gym leader. Basically, Misty is perfect. Aside from that, her costume is considerably easy to whip up. Some people might even already have the tools to make it in their own closets. I love Misty, always have and always will, but if you’re looking for a unique costume that will knock the socks off of everyone, this is not the costume for you.
Mikasa (from Attack on Titan): Attack on Titan (AoT) is easily one of the popular animes and mangas out there at the moment, so of course you’re going to have a huge influx of people scrambling to put together a costume appeals to the mass audience watching the show now. Mikasa is a great character that I enjoy very much, and once again her costume is easy to throw together (that is if you decided to buy all the pieces premade). I love AoT, so seeing characters on the convention floor brings me great joy, but I usually only see people dressed up as Mikasa when I go to conventions. Although I will state that I have also seen a few titans running around, but still not as often as I have seen Mikasa and her red scarf.
Joker (from “The Dark Knight”): There are many faces to the deranged clown who wreaks havoc in Gotham, but the version I have seen a little too much of is the Joker from the Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” Don’t get me wrong, I love this movie and I feel the late Heath Ledger did an amazing job, but there are so many other Jokers out there, so many laughs to perfect, so many other lines that are not, “Why so serious?” Looks like it’s time to read a couple of comic books, kids.
Deadpool: Whether you’re at a comic con or an anime con, there is one simple fact: you will see someone, or someones, walking around in a Deadpool costume. Everyone loves Deadpool, he’s great comedic relief, but you get a little tired after seeing him at convention, after convention, after convention.
Harley Quinn: Harley Quinn may be hard to write about due to the fact that there are so many incarnations of her, and they’ve all been done once… or twice… or a hundred times. The variation makes it a little better at first, because you might get to see a few different Harley Quinns at one con, but they you start to notice that there are multiples of each gracing the floors of conventions all the time. I love Harley Quinn, but I don’t necessarily want to see her every way I turn.
Elsa and Anna: With the spectacular success of “Frozen,” it has become a go to cosplay for many girls young and old. As I said with Mikasa from AoT, people are going to cosplay as something that appeals to the mass audience, and man oh man, does Queen Elsa and Princess Anna appeal to that audience. This fad with Elsa and Anna may or may not die down soon, but really in my opinion (despite the fact that I loved the movie with every inch of soul) it’s time to let it go.
The Doctor (from “Doctor Who”): Unless you have been living under a rock for the past couple of years, Doctor Who is a pretty big thing. I, myself, am a huge Doctor Who fan and even considered making an 11th Doctor costume at one point, that was until I noticed just how many people cosplay as almost every single regeneration of the doctor. Just as with Deadpool, it doesn’t matter what type of convention you’re going to, you’re going to see a few people dressed up as one of the incarnations of the Doctor.
Finn and Fiona (from “Adventure Time”): Everyone here probably already knows this, but “Adventure Time” has quite a large following of people. It seems like everyone and their dog has at least watched one or two episodes of “Adventure Time” at some point. This large fanbase, along with merchandise mimicking the headgear donned by these two characters, make it an easy target for cosplays that are overdone. You’re bound to see a Fiona and a Finn walking around the vendor tables at some point during your time at a convention.
Poison Ivy: How can girls not want to cosplay her when Poison Ivy is just so dang hot?! Red hair, nice body, and a cool costume made out of leaves… yeah, Poison Ivy is all around awesome. Though, a lot of people have the same ideas that I do, which makes this another overdone cosplay.
Sailor Moon and all of the other Guardians: I will forever be a Sailor Moon fangirl. I have wanted to dress up as Sailor Moon since I was about 6 years old, and probably will one day when I have the time to make another costume. Sailor Moon is nostalgia for a lot of men and women, so it’s easy to see why they would decided to dress up as her, or as one of her fellow Guardians. Sailor Moon is amazing, and I will always think that, but seeing her around every corner does get to be a bit mundane and boring.
There you have it, folks, the top 10 most overdone cosplays (in my opinion at least). I really hope this doesn’t stop any of you from doing one of these costumes, but there are some really great characters on this list, just keep in mind that you might meet some others dressed up exactly like you. Have fun creating your cosplays, you little Yaya Hans in the making, maybe I’ll be seeing you soon in your fabulous creations!
