A Look at Morocco

Abby Cota and her husband Giray Gunes traveled to Turkey and are currently in Morocco. They are contributing and sharing their adventures on Shuffle Online on Snapchat @ShuffleOnline. Here’s a look at a few of their adventures in Morocco. 

Jardín Majorelle in Marrakech

It was built in 1931 by architect, Paul Sinoir for Jacques Majorelle, a French painter. The garden was opened to the public in 1947. In 1962, after Jacques’ death, the garden fell into abandon. In 1989, Pierre Berge and Yves Saint Laurent acquired and restored the garden. After Yves Saint Laurent passed in 2008, the Jardin Majorelle was donated to the Foundation Pierre Berge – Yves Saint Laurent. There was a small memorial built and dedicated to the designer.

Palais de la Bahia 

This palace with the garden was built in the 19th century. The name means “brilliance.” The garden is approximately two acres with various fruit trees, lemon, lime, orange and apple.

This is the Harem in the palace. A harem is a place reserved for wives or female servants.

Saadian Tombs and souks

We explored the Saadian Tombs and markets. The Saadian Tombs contain the graves of the 60 members of the Saadi Dynasty (rulers of Morocco from 1554 to 1659). These tombs were discovered in 1917.
