5 Signs You Are a Miyazaki Fan

Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki’s films are beloved classics. They rank up there with Disney classics and Pixar hits. People young and old all over the world have fallen in love with Miyazaki’s characters. Theaters still screen these films are part of their “Miyazaki Madness” series.

Sadly, Miyazaki has retired (he goes back and forth on this, honestly, but let’s assume right now he is retired) and we won’t get any more films from him, but there are plenty of ways to show your love and appreciation. Here are five signs you are a Miyazaki fan. (Also ways to attract fellow fans!)

You have the graphic tees to show off your love of (insert character(s) here).

Once a geek, always a geek. I’ll wear my Miyazaki shirt from TeeTurtle any day and get a ton of compliments.

Doesn’t matter what mood you’re in, you’re down for a Miyazaki movie.

Whether it’s something lighthearted like “Ponyo,” or dark like “Princess Mononoke,” or deeply weird and profound like “Spirited Away,” Miyazaki fans like myself can watch these movies over and over and never get tired of them. In fact, with films like “Spirited Away,” it’s always interesting to learn what other people’s thoughts are about its motifs and themes.

According to Nerdist, there are plans to build a Hayao Miyazaki theme park in Japan. I don’t know when this park will open, but as soon as I find out, I’ll be booking a flight to Japan.

You own a Totoro plushie!

It’s a must! Totoro is the icon/mascot of Studio Ghibli. You’ll always see Totoro during production credits. Also, he’s big, soft, kind, and kid-friendly. Who doesn’t love Totoro?! I love Totoro so much, my best friend gave me a Totoro apron for my birthday last year.

Either you already have the tattoos or you plan on getting one soon.

I’m down for a tattoo silhouette of Kiki on her broom! “Kiki’s Delivery Service” is one of my all-time favorite Miyazaki films.
