There were some exceptional movies in 2017, but now we’re looking to the future! 2018 is sure to bring us some treasures, and we’ve spotlighted one movie per month in the next year for you to check out. The superhero films are a list all their own that you can find here, but the compilation below covers action, comedy, horror and more, so make sure you don’t miss out!
“Proud Mary” (Jan. 12)
This action-thriller stars Taraji P. Henson as a hitwoman in Boston, and appears to be in the same realm as ’70s blaxploitation films. Henson is always a winning lead, and with supporting actors such as Neal McDonough and Danny Glover, we’re looking forward to it.
“Game Night” (Feb. 23)
This movie is co-directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who are frequently partners in the world of film comedies. “Game Night” is a comedy-thriller about a group of friends whose game night becomes a murder mystery, but they’re not sure what is real and what is part of the game. It stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, among others.
“Isle of Dogs” (March 23)
This is Wes Anderson’s second foray into stop-motion animation (the first being 2009’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox”). The story follows a Japanese boy, Atari Kobayashi, who ventures to an island of quarantined dogs to find his best friend Spots. Among the actors providing voice talents to this movie are Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig, Courtney B. Vance and Ken Watanabe.
“A Quiet Place” (April 6)
Directed and co-written by star John Krasinski, “A Quiet Place” is the story of a family who must stay inhumanly quiet at all times for fear of attracting a mysterious danger. Krasinki’s real-life wife Emily Blunt co-stars as his onscreen wife.
“Where’d You Go, Bernadette” (May 11)
Based on the novel of the same name, this movie is a comedy-drama about a mother who goes missing. It’s directed by Richard Linklater (“Dazed and Confused” and “Boyhood”) and stars Cate Blanchett, Laurence Fishburne, Kristen Wiig, Judy Greer and Billy Crudup. If you’re a fan of the book, don’t miss it – and if you haven’t read it yet, there’s still time!
“Ocean’s 8” (June 8)
In this sequel to the Ocean’s Trilogy of the 2000s, Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, the estranged sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean. She gathers a team of women to pull off a heist at the Met Gala after being released from prison. This all-star cast also includes Mindy Kaling, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, Awkwafina and Helena Bonham Carter.
“The Purge: The Island” (July 4)
This is a horror-action film that serves as a prequel to the previous three films in the Purge series. As you might expect, this film will explore how the U.S. came to accept the idea of a Purge Night – and the good news is that it’s written by series creator James DeMonaco.
“Crazy Rich Asians” (Aug. 17)
This comedy is based on the novel by Kevin Kwan, about an American-born Chinese economics professor who gets caught up with Singapore’s rich and famous while there for a wedding. It features Constance Wu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong and Michelle Yeoh.
“Goosebumps: Horror Land” (Sept. 21)
Good news for fans of the 2015 “Goosebumps” feature film adaption: there’s a sequel coming! It appears that this film may be a take on R.L. Stine’s novella series of the same name, but very little is known about this one. There is a chance Jack Black will reprise his role as Stine, which would be even better news!
“Halloween” (Oct. 19)
David Gordon Green is bringing audiences back to Haddonfield in this sequel to the 1978 original, which takes place on a timeline in which none of the other sequels has happened. Jamie Lee Curtis will again be Laurie Strode, with Nick Castle – the original Michael Myers – again playing The Shape. Horror fans should be anticipating this one all year long.
“Creed II” (Nov. 21)
Written by Sylvester Stallone, Ryan Coogler and Cheo Hodari Coker, the sequel to the 2015 boxing film “Creed” will follow Adonis Creed as he tries to seek revenge against his father’s killer. Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren star.
“Mary Poppins Returns” (Dec. 25)
This family-friendly film stars Emily Blunt as the titular nanny, with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep and Angela Lansbury co-starring. It’s a sequel to the 1964 movie “Mary Poppins” and sticks with the musical fantasy genre in a time of grief with the adult Banks children. It’s sure to be a feel-good movie, but also a tearjerker.
