Comic Cons

Comicpalooza 2016: Saturday Recap

Comicpalooza, Texas’ largest comic and pop culture event, took place last weekend in humid Houston, TX. Housed in the expansive George R. Brown Convention Center, thousands of fans gathered to check out star-studded Q&A sessions, jaw-dropping cosplayers, talented vendors and so much more. Saturday was filled with celebrity meet and greets and great talented panels including, the cast of the “Alien” anthology and Kate Beckinsale.

The great thing about comic cons are the unexpected finds you didn’t know you needed, but want! Like these well-made light sabers, that are probably closest to the real thing that you’ll get to. They ranged in price from $100-$300. Definitely need to save up for one of these! The “Star Wars” films will have to do for now.

There were plenty of props and amazing cosplayers ranging from comic book heroes, to our favorite zombie candy corpse container! We need one of these for the next season watching party of “The Walking Dead.”

Speaking of “The Walking Dead,” we caught a glimpse of Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker signing autographs and taking photos with their fans. Fun fact: Michael Rooker doesn’t mind fans taking photos of him outside of the line. In fact, I was approached by one of his people that we could take photos as long as we didn’t interrupt the fan interaction. I know this may seem insignificant, but most celebrity meet-and-greets are very picky about outside photos being taken unless you’ve paid for a photo with them. So if you’re at a comic con next time with Michael Rooker in attendance, save the money and get a candid shot!

The cast of the “Alien” anthology

What a momentous reunion this was! It’s rare when a cast is able to gather together and reunite for die-hard fans. Especially a beloved anthology, like “Alien.” Sigourney was fantastic!

Fans had the opportunity to ask their favorite characters some questions about filming “Alien” and their favorite death scenes.

Sigourney’s character, Ripley, has been a great example of a badass woman protagonist. It was great to hear Michael Biehn explain that fans come up to him saying they loved his character Hix so much and why he thinks that is so.

Given that many cast members were present, answers were short and the panel went by quickly, given that it started late, but Bill Paxton still managed to deliver the jokes within the short amount of time.

When asked about the upcoming “Alien: Covenant” film, Sigourney did emphasize that it’s going to be amazing and she can’t wait for it to get going! You and us both Sigourney.

Kate Beckinsale

I was excited to see Kate Beckinsale, but didn’t really know what to expect. I’m a big fan of the “Underworld” films given that it proves that a woman can lead a franchise. Kate was hilarious, honest and very charming! She was candid about her film experiences and film choices she rather have not picked, but didn’t name specifics. Kate even confronted the recent Michael Bay, “Pearl Harbor” controversy. Turns out, it was just a complete misunderstanding and there’s no bad blood between the two.

We had a really great Saturday exploring Comicpalooza and enjoyed the panels we were able to attend. Stay tuned for Sunday’s recap where we saw Dominic Cooper and the cast of “The Boondock Saints.”
