For those of you who don’t know who Princess is, let me enlighten you. Princess is a Prince cover band formed by Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum five years ago.
Their performance at the Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival had been planned for weeks before Prince’s untimely demise this past Thursday, April 21st. In the wake of such devastating news, Maya told her sold out show Saturday night that she wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to perform. Thankfully for us, she could.
Rudolph and Lieberum walked out to the image of hundreds of audience members waving purple glow sticks. The Paramount Theatre here in Austin had given them out to ticket holders as a surprise for the band. They whipped the crowd into a frenzy by playing Prince’s earliest hits. Both Rudolph and Lieberum shared personal stories about their love for Prince and their history with his music.
After lingering in the back for far too long, I joined the crowd forming near the stage. People of all ages were singing along and dancing in the aisle. Princess wrapped up their show with a beautiful rendition of “Purple Rain” that brought tears to every person in attendance that night. I can’t think of a better goodbye for our sweet Prince.
Well that’s it folks! Moontower was a huge success and I can’t wait to see who will be headlining in 2017!
