It appears that there will be no shortage of superhero films in 2018; in fact, there are 11 scheduled throughout the year if you include animated features, villain stories and antiheroes. We decided to narrow the playing field down to about half in case you’re feeling overwhelmed with these stories lately. Here are the five superhero movies we recommend prioritizing in 2018.
“Black Panther” (Feb. 16)
“Black Panther” is the latest from Marvel, focusing on T’Challa, the king of Wakanda and the man behind Black Panther. The film tells the story of a struggle for power in Wakanda that could lead to a global war. It boasts a great cast, featuring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett and more. Even if you’re not embedded in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just one viewing of the trailer for “Black Panther” will rope you in for this one.
“The New Mutants” (Apr. 13)
The first of two X-Men movies to be released in 2018, this film focuses on the younger class of mutants coming into their powers. It has a darker tone than other superhero films and looks like it might even dip into the horror genre. The cast include’s Maisie Williams from “Game of Thrones,” Charlie Heaton from “Stranger Things,” and Anya Taylor-Joy from last year’s “Split.” If you’re looking for something more sinister than they typical superhero story, this is the movie for you.
“Avengers: Infinity War” (May 4)
Of all the 2018 superhero films, this one may be the biggest. It will feature the Avengers, as well as Spider-Man, the Guardians of the Galaxy and possibly even more characters. The large and powerful group of heroes will finally be facing off against Thanos, who is plotting to obtain all of the Infinity Stones so he can become all-powerful. Fans of the MCU can’t miss “Infinity War.”
“The Incredibles 2” (June 15)
This Disney-Pixar animated feature has been more than a decade in the making and something fans have been looking forward to since 2004’s “The Incredibles.” The most family-friendly of all the superhero films being released this year, “The Incredibles 2” will follow the Parr family as they try to live normal lives while also keeping the city safe as The Incredibles. They’ll also team up with Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) again to fight a new villain called The Underminer.
“Aquaman” (Dec. 21)

The only DC Extended Universe film for the year, “Aquaman” will focus on Jason Momoa’s character of the same name. It will focus on Arthur Curry/Aquaman leading the people of Atlantis in addition to being a global hero. The supporting cast includes Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman and more. “Aquaman” will be a great holiday movie to see for fans of the superhero genre and specifically the DCEU.
