You know those kinds of bands that you can turn on and immediately feel energized, full of life, yet wanting more? That’s what Coast Modern has become for me. So when I heard (and watched) about their Haunted House Party 2018, I immediately knew I had to go. I mean, who wouldn’t want to party with these fellas after watching their tour promo video?
The Haunted House tour is not only a jamfest, talent show, and party, but it is also what Coast Modern has deemed as a “Bring-A-Thon,” where attendees are encouraged to bring glow sticks, lights, and other decorations of the sorts to help set a funky and special vibe for each show.
Their stop in Austin, Texas was held at The Parish this past Saturday evening on March 3 and certainly did not disappoint. Openers Netherfriends and The Technicolors kicked off the night with their upbeat and chill tunes, setting the mood for the remainder of the night.
Coast Modern’s set included favorites like “Dive,” “Guru,” and “Hollow Life,” and many more. I personally loved their recently released cover of “Electric Feel” by MGMT. Their rendition is not only fresh, but also has a unique punch that is just a bit too difficult to describe, so I won’t even try. Just take a listen for yourself. Needless to say, it’s one of those tracks I’ll definitely be blaring in my car with the windows down during those soon-to-come and much anticipated summer nights.
Other covers I immensely enjoyed include “Every Morning” by Sugar Ray (shout out to my older brothers for overplaying this late 90’s jam on the way to school every morning for a good year) and “A Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin (yes, you read me correctly – an Aretha cover).
At the end of the evening, I still couldn’t get enough of Coast Modern’s breezy yet psychedelic beats and already can’t wait to hear more new music of theirs in months to come. Check out some shots from the event below!
