Trailer: First look at female-led “Ocean’s 8” starring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett

“Ocean’s 8” is one of the most anticipated films in 2018. It could be a game changer in my opinion for all-female castings and films in the future. I love heist films and enjoyed the “Ocean’s 11” franchise, but to see Sandra Bullock (Debbie Ocean) and Cate Blanchett (Lou) become the new George Clooney and Brad Pitt is quite a ground breaking moment. When I see all-female ensembles I tend to cringe a bit because they tend to be caricatures of women. They are over-the-top, or just talking about men, or are clumsy and eccentric. I’m not saying women are not those things, but it’s always a slapstick type of film that I don’t enjoy and has been overdone.

I was worried “Ocean’s 8” might take this approach, but seeing the first trailer from the film it looks like it has managed to avoid those stereotypes and not emphasize  “female” heist film – just a fun, heist action film. Pulling a con at the Met gala? Genius! That will set the stage for a lot of “celebrity” guest cameos according to IMDb.  I really hope this film lives up to the trailer and does well because then maybe we can switch gears and not have to mention “all-female” or “female-led” film since they will just be normal. We never say “man-led” heist film. It’s just implied.

The cast includes also includes Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, with Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter. What do you think of the trailer? Are you excited to watch the film? Let us know in the comments below!

“Ocean’s 8” hits theaters June 8, 2018.
